A note from the Principal:
Dear HWS families,
We had a favorite assembly this past week with the BHS Madrigal’s coming to perform! It is always a highlight to hear the beautiful songs and the students were enthralled with the costumes!
This past week we also had our district instructional coaches and a facilitator go into classrooms taking data on how students were using their independent time while teachers were meeting with small groups for guided reading. Our goal is for students to be engaged in worthwhile, educational tasks while they are at the teacher table, but also when they are working on their own. This collected data will help us target areas for improvement and celebrate all that is working well with our instructional planning.
As we are moving closer to break, here is another excerpt from the article, “5 Tips to Ease Holiday Stress” by Catherine Newan.
Tame Toy Lust
On the one hand, we worry that we’re spoiling our kids with more than they need, more than we can afford, more than our house can hold; on the other, we want our kids to get what their little hearts desire. What’s the happy medium? Try one of these approaches:
Lose the list. Instead of encouraging your child to spool out an endless tally of wanted items, ask her about the one or two things she might most like to receive. When our daughter was 8, this meant an American Girl doll, which she got (along with a few odds and ends) and played with for the rest of the day.
Start stuff-less traditions. The Hanukkah menorah and Christmas tree do this already, of course, but consider adding my household’s faves: a night spent in sleeping bags under the tree or eggnog with breakfast. It’s nice to be able to indulge the kids over the course of the season with a focus on experiences rather than things.
Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,
Gina Greenwald
Principal
A note from the PTO:
HOLIDAY SHOP Reminder
Get Ready! The Holiday Gift Shop starts Tuesday!
December 13 – 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
December 14 and 15 – 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Location: HWS Room 107
This program makes it possible for children to experience the joy of choosing their own special gift for family and friends. Your child should bring the gift list planner envelope with money (cash or check made out to Hoover-Wood School PTO) or prepaid Holiday Shop gift vouchers on his or her shopping day.
To purchase a voucher or view gifts online visit: https://8310000.holidaytreasures.com/ and click on “Parent and Payment Information” or “View Gifts”. Vouchers are available in $10, $15, or $20 (a $1 processing fee per voucher applies). Vouchers act as cash and change can be given.
Also, we are still looking for a few more volunteers to assist children in the shop with their purchases and to gift wrap their purchases. Please use the following link to sign up to volunteer: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0C49A4AB22A7FC1-holiday
If you have any questions, please email Maria Monroig-Frank (mlmonroig05@gmail.com)
If you would like to volunteer during the time your child’s classroom is in the Holiday Shop, please review the classroom schedule below and sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0C49A4AB22A7FC1-holiday

Holiday Teacher Cookie Exchange ![????]()
Date: Monday, December 19
Time: Drop off cookies by 10:00 am
Each year the PTO hosts a Cookie Exchange to show our teachers some love and appreciation by baking a variety of cookies for them to enjoy with friends and family. We need A LOT of cookies to fill their tummies and cookie tins. We would appreciate your help by baking one type of cookie so that teachers can have an assortment.
Bakers should plan to make 4-5 dozen of the same type of cookies and sign up using the following link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0C49A4AB22A7FC1-holiday1
Thanks in advance for helping us show the teachers how much we appreciate them!
Don’t forget about AmazonSmile! An easy way to raise money for Hoover Wood is by shopping! Especially during the holiday season! Below are the instructions to link your AmazonSmile account to Hoover Wood in the app.
Open the app and find ‘Settings’ in the main menu (☰). Tap on ‘AmazonSmile’ and follow the on-screen instructions to turn on AmazonSmile on your phone. Select your charity by searching Hoover-Wood Elementary
Food Drive
The HWS Student Council will be hosting a food drive for the Batavia Food Pantry, from now until December 20. Students may drop off items in the box located by their classroom door.
If you would like to make a monetary donation, please put cash or a check made out to the Batavia Food Pantry in an envelope marked “Food Drive”, and include your child’s name and grade. For information about the pantry’s most needed items, please visit: https://bataviafoodpantry.org/current-needs/.
News from the LRC
The Giving Tree
A huge shout-out to the HWS families and staff members who supported the Batavia Access
Committee’s Toy Drive this year. Wow, you are amazing! The Giving Tree was overflowing with new toys, books, winter hats, mittens, gloves, scarves and more. It was a heart-warming site to see! Thank you all for supporting this worthy cause. Your kindness and generosity are greatly
appreciated.
The Celebration Books Program
The HWS Celebration Books program provides students an opportunity to donate a book to the
LRC for birthdays, special occasions and in honor or memory of a loved one. Thank you to the
following students who donated a book to the LRC, in celebration of their November birthdays
and half-birthdays, too! Your donation helps our LRC collection grow:
Camden C. (1ST), Emma C. (3Z), Eleanor B. (1ST), Sammy J. (KH), Paxton M. (5C), Emma S.
(1F), Leila L. (5C), Signe G. (3C), Cassidy A. (3A), Juliana B. (2RU), Mackenzie B. (KH) and
Geneva L. (KH).
We will continue with weekly Messengers on Fridays throughout the school year. All school messengers can also be found and translated into over 125 languages on our News Wall.
